Handmade Card Stock Paper
Cardstock is a type of paper that is significantly thicker than standard writing or printing paper, but it’s generally thinner and more flexible than paperboard (what most people think of as cardboard).
Here are its key characteristics and uses:
Seeded and unseeded Handmade Card Stock Paper
Card Stock Paper size
Growing Paper manufacture their card stock paper on their farm just outside of Malmesbury by recycling post consumer office paper. The paper is handmade and available in the following sizes.
- A3+ card stock paper is 329 mm x 483 mm in size. A lot of A3 printer models are equipped to print on the A3+ card stock size.
- A3 card stock paper is the standard 297 mm x 420 mm size.
- A4 card stock paper is the standard 210 mm x 297 mm.
Card Stock Paper Weight
This is the defining feature. Cardstock is heavier and stiffer than regular office paper. Paper weight is often measured in grams per square meter (GSM) or pounds (lb).
- Standard printer paper might be around 75-120 GSM (20-32 lb bond weight).
- Cardstock typically starts around 135 GSM and can go up to 300 GSM or even higher (often referred to by cover weight, like 65 lb, 80 lb, 100 lb, or 110 lb cover). The higher the number, the thicker and heavier the paper.
- Growing Paper cardstock starts at 160 GSM and go up to 350 GSM.
Cardstock comes in an array of:
- Color: Basic off-white. Growing Paper only uses post consumer paper and do not add any chemicals to bleach it and as such, our paper is not completely white.
- Textures: Smooth and textured. Growing Paper mainly produces textured cardstock due to the seeds that we embed in our paper and our handmade paper making process.
- Finishes: Growing paper only produces matte paper with no gloss.
Common Uses for Card Stock Paper
Its sturdiness makes it ideal for projects where a quality feel are important:
- Crafting: Scrapbooking, model making, paper flowers, die-cutting.
- Stationery: Greeting cards, invitations, postcards, business cards, place cards, thank you notes.
- Presentation: Report covers, dividers, presentation folders, tags, menus.
- Marketing Materials: Brochures, flyers that need to be more durable.
- Art: Used as a base for certain types of drawing, painting, or mixed media.
In summary, cardstock is the go-to choice when you need a paper that’s heavier and more substantial than your everyday copy paper, making it perfect for crafts and professional-looking documents or stationery.
